To say that whatever will be a fatal blow to whoever does not neccessarily imply that one wishes that, nor is the statement neccessarily correct.

I hope you and most others believe that success in Iraq would be a good thing and I doubt that you believe it would be a fatal blow to the left. I certainly don't but I hope it would moderate the dem leadership.

Now a stake through the heart or exposure to sunlight, that would be a fatal blow.
