A person typically enlists for a specific period of time, say 4 years. However, the complete requirement is typically 8 years. The person will be on active duty for the 4 years and the remaining time in the inactive reserve. About all you have to do in the inactive reserve is tell them your address. You don't have to attend any drills or anything unless you're recalled to active duty.
