I remember it used to get very hot, and making a very light swishing/squeaking noise as the inner cylinder rotated (about twice a second). And it gave off a faint, acrid odor, not totally unpleasant.
Its puzzling how such a totally insignificant and unimportant event can make such a lasting and powerful impression.
