I know a little bit about AC units

I have a canister of R22 that is about half full for my home unit. I use the superheat method for charging my unit. It’s not too hard to do. You just take the low side suction pressure and temperature. Then, using the outside temp and a chart you get another number. Do a little math and you know if your system is fully charge, over charged or under charged.

In college, my old Toyota leaked a small amount of R12. About a can (about a buck at the time) a year kept it charged. Then they put in the ban. I had my system worked on many times, but they never found the leak. I spent over $2500, and it leaked even worse than before.

I converted my Jeep over to HFC134. It wasn’t too hard. I had to completely flush the system. I used rigged up an old refrigerator compressor to pump out the system into a canister. Then I put in the new fittings and filled it up with HFC134 w/oil. It worked like a charm. This was after I installed a new compressor and evaporator/drier.

Anyway, I am glad we can buy 134 over the counter. It really sucked for those years we could not buy R12 and had no alternatives. A cheep $1 fix turned into thousands of $$$.
