Powell would have been better to practice due diligence rather than an apology. Scroom.
Now, lessee. It clearly takes a guy like Saddam to hold the country together. There is going to be fighting as long as the US is there, and there will be fighting when the US is gone.
(Have you noticed that now the press releases talk about "American" troops with Iraqis, and NOT the alleged "Coalition". We're being weaned away from the nonsense there was a real "coalition".)
Until some ruthless, brutal bastard comes along to force a detente upon the various sects and tribes.
It took a Tito in the former Yugoslavia, a Stalin in the former USSR, and a Saddam in Iraq. Upset the very delicate balance they achieved, albeit by absolutely inhumane means, and there is the very real chance of chaos.
The USSR blew apart relatively peacefully because it never did try to integrate its various divisions. In Iraq, the same solution would be the three states, as Art suggested.
In the former Yugoslavia there was chaos.
And the same in Iraq.
