Unless the lens is moving in and out somehow, I don't see how the same fly (obviously sitting on the surface) could produce two widely-varying sizes of image. It would be interesting if vibrations in the earth and air tended to make insects light, kind of like humid heavy thunderstorm weather tends to make birds stay on the ground.
