Not a pretty thought.
I can tell you firsthand that the two scariest scenarios on a submarine were fire and flooding. Luckily we never had a major fire onboard but the thought was absolutely chilling. Not like you could run out on deck to get a breath of fresh air. The drills we ran required instant action and immediate donning of gas masks to have any chance of survival.
