"I'm waiting for journalists to apply the same level of scrutiny to themselves that they apply to other industries. At what point do we declare a systemic failure and begin looking for the weak links in a profession that is critical to the survival of democracy? When do we stop treating the revelations as unrelated episodes, instead of symptoms of a larger cancer?"

Well I think she is going to have a long wait. I think a key aspect would the lack of motivation. Another aspect is there is general lack investigative ability of the MSM. [It's sort of like the spy myth- that spying is "done" by secret agents overcover. Whereas most intelligence gathering is done by "walk ins".]
The problem with the press is they are owned by mega corporations. They aren't going to solve their own problems. But with the independance of web bloggers we might get some actual investigative reporting done- and at this point MSM won't be important enough to investigate. What you are going to get is the real journalism being on the web, and the MSM will continue to be a source of entertainment "news". For the Bloggers to then investigate MSM, it would like the press "investigating" hollywood movie stars- it's stuff of a gossip rag.
Time for Journalists to Hold Their Own Accountable
