It's hard for us old guys who remember George to not add that "s" on the end of Christoper's name, isn't it?
To the best of my knowledge, "black kryptonite" was pulled out of a hat by the Smallville writers. Never heard of it in the comics.
As I recall from my mispent youth, Green Kryptonite removed Superman's powers as an initial effect, and then was lethal with continued exposure.
White Kryptonite was lethal to plants.
Red Kryptonite would do something weird to Superman. And it never had the same effect twice. On Smallville, it seems to be some sort of "id release" device.
Gold Kryptonite would permanently remove Superman's powers.
As usual, lead stopped the radiation.
Interestingly, lead seems to have a mystic effect in Superman comics. Superman couldn't see through even a paper-thin sheet of lead, although he could see through entire mountains or even the whole Earth. Go figure.
In later comics, Green Kryptonite, which was completely harmless to humans in my youth, developed a long-term hazardous effect on humans like something radioactive.
Only in the Smallville TV show does Green Kryptonite give humans weird powers.
