"For people who felt so sorry for Afghani women, and Iraqi women, how come they neglect the Saudi women?
Simple: in political terms, it's neither convenient nor useful. "
Why don't we first start with what is possible.
But if the women in Iraq vote, then it's matter of time [a few years] before this becomes more doable in other countries.
A factor you are missing is Saudis don't want to strenghten the fundementalists- in which the terrorist are minority. But just the stablity you will get from free elections and free press in Iraq will evenually allow the possiblity of woman getting more rights in other counties in region.
We focused on ensuring women rights because we had much stronger miltary control in Aghanistan and/or Iraq. Plus, we were looking to build new coalitions within these countries, rather depending on existing coalitions [which could be weakened by trying to push for acceptance of this idea].
Saudi Arabia is a soveriegn nation, the leaders of this country were educated in the best schools in America and Europe, their highest priority like all other countries is their national security. They didn't even want aggressively go after these terrorists, but terrorist forced their hand, and now they are addressing this issue [in what they regard as a rational approach].
Finally you missing the point of Saudi Arabia having ANY elections- certainly an improvement.
