A large enough dirty bomb would be in many ways more destructive than a standard nuclear bomb.
While a nuclear bomb would probably cause more immediate casualties, a dirty bomb would probably undermine the very fabric of a modern society far beyond the immediate blast zone. And for a much longer period of time.
