The government mandates airbags in cars, should it pay for them? harping about unfunded government mandates opens a pandora's box.
The issue isn't that the government occassionally buys vaccines, the issue is should the government control the price of the vaccine it and all the rest of us buy?
By forcing an artificially low price, the government squeezes the potential manufacturer, forcing it to cut corners, lower quality, produce vaccine at a loss, or get out of the business altogether.
Its not suprising that under such a system the vaccine batch would get ruined by contaminates, and that there would be no other producer available to pick up the slack.
Maybe if John Kerry and John Edwards get elected, they can sue the manufacturer for breach of contract for failing to fufill its orders. That way they can scare the remaining two manufacurers out of business.
