New Zealand is a tricky one. It's a small fragment and has been squashed a lot in its travels so finding where it fits is difficult.
Most Authors put is a little further south of Bass Strait, as a detached fragment of Antarctica. Bass Strait appears to correlate with the Lord Howe rise - a similarly submarine ridge that has not been thrust up into mountains and remains stranded between then east coast of Australia and the wide blue Pacific. This extends south and links into the west coast of New Zealand.
This image shows (just) the rift between Australia and New Zealand and the ~N45E direction of spreading, placing New Zealand south of Tasmania when you reconstruct.

It's worthwhile exploring that Topex site!
Pieces of Cretaceous continental fragments underly Fiji, Tonga, New Caledonia, Vanuatu etc and from time to time are the focus of abortive oil exploration efforts.
There are strong parallels in the pre-mid-Cretaceous geology with Eastern Australia, though...
