Space/Science » in reply to Layers and more layers (big pic)

My first guess

Remember when Oppy was on the rim, and the report from the TES indicated a basaltic composition and images suggested sand-dune type cross-bedding? The prediction then was Basaltic Dunes.

I've been waiting for this. This is the layer below* the sulfates. And it's gonna tell us alot about the time before the sulfates were deposited. We might get to see if the contact between the units is sharp or gradational. We might see if there is evidence supporting a groundwater source for surface "water". I see spherules in there, I also see cross-bedding. There may be a sulfate component, but alot of that is dust. The chemical compositional changes as we go up section will be very important. If the blueberries are in basaltic dunes, are they clasts or are they a diagenic thing? Are the fracture patterns the same? Is there a weak fabric that is at an oblique angle to the bedding? What is that? Appears to be a difference in cementation (first quess)

Hate to break some hearts here, but my guess is that Oppy's gonna be here for awhile.

* If the Sahbka model is applicable, then dunes and evaporites will exist at the same time. But stratigraphically speaking, these rocks are older than the ones above on the rim.
