A more accurate statement would be...

"New Jersey elementary school was hit by 20mm cannon shells from an ANG F-16."

I'm still waiting to read more details about this incident. Did the pilot screw up and actually dive on the school and shoot at it (straffing), or did he screw up and squeeze off the rounds while approaching the target, or did he have an accidental cannon firing incident. I have not been able to find the answers and would appreciate good references.

If he actually straffed the school, he screwed up massively to miss the target range by that amount. If he armed his cannon before entering the range and bumbed the trigger (25 rounds would be about a 0.5 second burst from the cannon*), then again he screwed up big time. However, if there was an electrical glitch that caused his cannon to fire on its own, then we need to know to make sure there isn't a similar problem on other planes.

Fortunately, no one was hurt except perhaps for this pilot's career.

*The 20mm Vulcan cannon in planes like the F-16 can fire at up to 6000 rounds per minute, or 100 rounds per second. However, it takes a little time to spin up the barrels (it's a Gatlin-style gun) and fewer than 100 rounds are fired in the first second.
