Ed, lame duck status confers special conditions.

First: Mr. Bush is under no pressure to run for office during this term because he doesn't get to run again. His attention doesn't have to be turned in a partisan direction unless he prefers it to be.

Second: Presidents in their second terms have been known to look less at party concerns and more to their places in history.

Third: If Mr. Bush chooses partisanship over statesmanship, he also doesn't have to give a good goddamn about the interests and wishes of those who opposed him in the last election.

His choices as a lame duck are much less circumscribed than they were in his first term. He can kiss partisan interests off if he wants, knowing he never needs to fight for the party nomination again, or he can push partisanship to its limits, knowing that he doesn't need any middle-of-the-road voters anymore.

It's all up to him.

I don't find that especially calming, but I do think we'll find out more about what George Bush really wants in these next four years than we did in the last four.
