We've had "black boxes" in our cars since 1996

The "black boxes" came with OBD-II in 1996. The air bag module has a flash memory (FIFO) that records various Powertrain Control Module inputs for the last 5 seconds prior to air bag inflation, e.g. throttle position, brake actuation, etc. Someone in Canada was recently prosecuted with data from his car's air bag module. The air bag module on GM-Saturns is in the center hump near the emergency brake release handle. Pull up the plastic cover and you'll find it bolted to the chassis. I've toyed with the idea of opening up that module and pulling out the flash memory chip. My concern is that pulling that chip might disable the airbags (wish I had a schematic).
