Mr. Kill All The Arabs Mayer has given it his blessing. Of course, he's a bloodthirsty SOB.
We expect crimes of the insurgents based on past behavior. We don't expect crimes of our own. If we're getting them, something is dreadfully wrong. The acts at Abu Graib are an aberration, you say?
If we expect atrocities of the insurgents based on their past behavior, even though it's obvious that not many guerillas are also kidnapping and beheading people, how long will it take for the Iraqis to expect atrocities of American soldiers based on the acts of a few?
Because the enemy did something worse first, that makes it OK to violate the rules of war and to break discipline? Does military discipline allow this? I'm glad to read that the Pentagon anticipates a criminal investigation. We'll see if the outcome is a 25-cent fine and the injunction not to do such things in front of reporters. :(
Shooting prisoners, especially wounded ones, doesn't do a lot to encourage surrender, either.
