Even in WWII things weren't great - war is hell, no matter when it's fought.
My father was in the Canadian Army Medical Corps besed in London in WWII, and he really didn't like to talk about his experiences. It often took a long time to get the wounded back there and he saw an awful lot of gangrene and mutilated bodies. No glory at all.
