I don't think this is very mysterious: Sounds like (at least) three rocks co-orbiting, probably descendants of one object that broke up some time ago. Probably many more in the cluster, but our planet only intercepted three (that we know of).
The ground track of the big expected asteroid 2012 DA14 was southwest-to-northeast, a totally different vector. I can believe that they're not related. One hell of a coincidence, but that's all.
