Back in the 1980s, I went through satellite training with a female engineer from Texas. Her father, also an engineer, had insisted that all of his kids' first jobs be in fast food places. He wanted them to see the value of an education and the consequences of not having marketable job skills*. It worked - all of his kids graduated college and had good careers.
*You don't have to have a college degree to make a good living, but you have to have marketable job skills. There are a lot of people who lack college degrees and who do well. On the other hand, there are quite a few people with degrees but who lack marketable skills. A good friend's daughter has a degree in English with a music minor, but the only job she was able to get in Chicago was in a retail store. She's pretty frustrated right now.
