Second half of 1997

I'm having a look at all the videos (since roughly 1985) in the event I wished to convert everything into DVD...
These are mostly recorded CNN reports (many from the late John Holliman).
The second half of 1997 was very eventful!!
Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars (vindicating Goldin's FBC policy) sending a great Mars feast among scientists.
The Mars Global Surveyor started its mission in orbit around Mars (and still performs today) to send us amazing pictures of the red planet.
The HST had been refurbished earlier in 97 (february) and amazing pictures of the Pistol star or colliding galaxies were shown.
Also, it was the 50th anniversary of the Roswell case and the first faster than sound flight; also the 40th of Sputnik.
The X-prize was renewed.
NASA went ahead with Cassini in spite of mounting opposition (and we're now enjoying discoveries thanks to that decision).
There were Shuttle flights (some went relatively unnoticed like STS85 (with Jan Davis) but STS84 and STS86 were Mir related and also involved french and russian astronauts.
Goldin had to make a speech giving the green light to Dave Wolf to remain aboard Mir, inspite of lots of protest claiming Mir wasn't safe.
Michael Foale was brought to Mir with STS84 and brought down with STS86 and while in space, he went through a collision with a serious leak and numerous computer malfunctions and Mir was practically dayly in the news at the time!
This actually meant the crew managed everytime to save the situation, to make it secure again.
What a contrast with today! Michael Foale went through tough times inside the Russian Mir space station, but he was launched and landed by an american vehicle, while earlier this year, he spent 6 uneventful months aboard a mainly US space station, launching and landing with a russian spacecraft.
