While an Air Force General, Pete Worden brought us the DC-X launcher & the Clementine lunar explorer. They were so much cheaper than anything NASA offered that monopolistic and corrupt Dan Goldin frantically lobbied to have both programs extinguished. Their revolutionary significance is briefly discussed in the final couple of paragraphs here though:

Anyhow, General Worden (whom I've never met) has evidently been a big proponent of competitive prizes, too (and was a major donor of the X Prize: http://www.xprize.org/who/major_donors.php ). Now that NASA's experimenting with offering competitive prizes:

that's inspirational.
Encouragingly enough, Pete Worden now has the aggressive backing of the Senate space subcommittee director:

Alternatives from the military industrial complex would seemingly let contractors run all over the already bloated and overpriced NASA, thereby exacerbating the problem. And would the other serious contender from the private sector, Robert Walker, make much of a difference after spending years getting paid to lobby for Lockheed Martin, the Mars monopolist?

It would seem that Pete Worden's the ideal choice. Will the Bush Administration make the right selection though? Or does the Bush Administration have other priorities (rightly or wrongly) than those of space entrepreneurs? We'll know soon enough....

Additional reasons: Clementine, DC-X, he was an X-Prize MAJOR donor, and is a Shuttle basher
