The CEV would be perfect as the crew vehicle of a manned Space Elevator of the Liftport design - with a set of solid motors to give it a decent lateral thrust it should be able to survive virtually every failure below the safe altitude at 23,600 km. That's how I am planning to write it up for my contest entry.
