Maybe it's a Californian thing....
At a very early age I was told: "The ocean is a wild animal, never trust it!" My parents were told the same thing by their parents. I was also told at an early age about the warning signs of a tsunami. Those people paid a severe price for not teaching their kids to respect the ocean.
