There is some evidence to suggest that Michelangelo was gay.

Also, there may have been cultural or artistic conventions, or restrictions. for depicting genitalia, particularly in religious art.

Then again, for the sculptor working in marble, there may have been purely technical limitations. Marble can be pretty brittle, not to mention it would have been an irresistable target to vandals.
