I think the plan is to eventually get to Husband Hill because it is the highest point in the Columbia Hills.
Not only would it be the ultimate pancam shot, but it would be emotionally satisfiying to human nature to have our robot conquer the summit. A good publicity opportunity for NASA.
After that I remember it looked like there's a way down to the SE where they could ultimately get a look at the dark spot. We may still find out if it's a cave or not.
