Subject says it all. I like Slackware because they use a KISS philosophy (Keep It Simple Stupid). Slackware is not into fancy bells and whistles (people poo-poo Slackware for that same reason, calling it "old fashioned"). Also Slackware uses gzipped tarballs rather than RPM files which IMHO are evil. I avoid RedHat because I believe it is overpriced and overrated.
Make sure you get the 2.6 version of the Linux kernel (it's currently at 2.6.10). My system is running on 2.4.25 and I'm told it's obsolete. Supposably Linus Torvalis did lots of neat things with the 2.6 version. There are some things that won't install on my machine because the kernel is too old. A simple kernel upgrade doesn't work (issues with libraries, etc.). Soon I'll have to bite the bullet and do the full upgrade. This is hard for me because my current system is heavily tweeked to my tastes so I give up alot when I do a full upgrade.
