re: What if the Moon didn't exist?

There is an excellent book out by that title, and its conclusion is that life would not exist without the moon to create frequent, moderate tides and to slow the rotation of the earth.
The book also discusses several what-if scenarios in lay terms and is a great resource for thinking and studying how rare we indeed may be, and how fragile in some life on earth is.
