Diagramming sentences, or, as James Thurber said in his essay "Here Lies Miss Groby", crucifying a sentence on the blackboard. I especially like this example.

I just thought I'd contribute a linguistic form of torture by pencil to complement your mathematical one. We did both in Catholic school.
