An essential of guerilla warfare - support of the population - as seen by experts.

"The two greatest theoreticians of guerilla war are China’s Mao Zedong and Vietnam’s Vo Nguyen Giap. Both proved that a guerilla army, while weak in relation to highly organized state forces supported and equipped by foreign powers, can eventually prevail."

"By itself, however, the use of guerilla warfare to win political power is not enough. Guerilla forces cannot survive without the support of the population–support that can range from providing guerillas safe haven to providing them intelligence on troop movements. The population is at the same time the inexhaustible supply of guerilla recruits–a fact indivisible from the population’s perception that the guerillas are fighting in their behalf."

"The survival of guerrilla warfare is entirely dependent upon the support of the oppressed population, who provide soldiers for combat, food, shelter, intelligence, medical supplies, etc.; while the guerrilla soldier usually acquires their armament and equipment from the enemy or the arms market. Thus it has been constantly stressed by guerrilla leaders that the guerrilla soldier must: 1) establish and maintain exemplary relations among the people; 2) inspire the people with the ideal which they fight for; 3) vigilantly guard to ensure the ideal of liberation is forever anchored to the revolutionary cause, all of which depend on good communication. Thus the battle of information warfare is one of the most important battles the guerrilla soldier will fight. Without this battle won, the umbilical cord between the guerrilla fighters and the population will be severed, and the revolution will wither and die."
