The liberals want to regulate the environment to death. Anybody who opposes any rule to protect the environment, no matter how useless and stupid, is branded as a reactionary.
The conservatives want to ignore the environment to death. Anybody who wants to impose any rule to protect the environment, no matter how necessary, is branded as an obstructionist and luddite.

The liberals want to spend vast quantities of money on social programs that are not only worthless, but harmful, such as the welfare system. Whoever opposes such programs, no matter how useless, is considered cruel and heartless.
The conservatives want to spend vast quantities of money on weapons that simply will never work, such as missile defense. Whoever opposes such programs, no matter how useless, is considered to be a traitor.
