Not sure which of these we're talking about, as several papers seem to touch on this subject. The other papers also look interesting.
I would also like to see exactly what defines "very dry." Rainfall? Lack of vegetation? Is it all weather, or other things as well? A lot of desert expansion over the past thousands of years, particularly in North Africa, has been helped along by poor agricultural and grazing practices.
