LJK asked:
"As I like to ask anyone who says SETI is unworkable, what others methods do they know for finding life beyond Earth, especially intelligent life?"
----- end quote ----
To find life beyond the Earth in other star systems, you use a nulling interferometer like the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF), refer to:
http://www.terrestrial-planet-finder.com/
If a TPF detects a planet with an atmosphere that contains free oxygen with trace quantities of methane and ozone then that discovery counts as "finding life beyond the Earth".
SETI based upon the assumption of ET continuously beaming a high power signal at us is a silly waste of money. SETI will fail and leave people with the false conclusion that life is extremely rare in the galaxy. SETI has as much hope of success as using an Ouija board (an Ouija board is much cheaper).
