An out of date story

The 9 foot diameter disk entered the thick beige atmosphere at many thousands of miles per hour...

Its arrival was like those of millions of other bits of flotsam, the only difference was its trajectory had been planned by intelligent beings- and its goal was to survive the inferno it faced...

Friction built up- slowing the disk rapidly... its kinetic energy was transferred to the molecules in the atmosphere, the craft slowed...

Finally it released its shield and deployed parchutes it could now see- its were the eyes for humanity.

All it saw was thick featureless haze- it would be hours until its creators were bored to death by the non view...

Huygens drifted through the thick haze- analyzing the atmosphere recording the results for rebroadcast to Cassini for relay to Earth... All the while recording featureless haze to bore the humans that made it....

It was expected that the probe would not see much until it was just about to impact the surface, the series of pictures it took just before touchdown showed little in the way of features- A hint of land in the distance and far reaching dark seas as far as its eye could see...

It landed with a splash in the methane sea, transmission was garbled as it righted itself... It was designed to float... the pictures continued- as boring as the others, hints of 'land' in the distance, but mostly obscured by the waves washing over the probe...

On Earth

The mission scientist spoke positively, but it was clear he was disappointed... "Well, the pictures were not the primary goal of the mission... the data from the other instruments will keep us all busy a long time..." The camera pans away as he keeps talking- in the background a young man with headphones on seems intent on his screen....

"The real data and knowledge is going to be things that we cant 'see', the fact that the probe made it to the surface shows that we have succeeded and we have more data than we dreamed of..."

The young man, a lowly grad student seems excited in the camera....

"You have to realize our 5 senses are not the best to explore an alien planet with..."

The kid is frantically flipping switches and typing....

"We will learn more than we could dream of from this mission, pictures really would be nice but they werent..."

The kid turns a knob and takes off the headphones... He plays the last few minutes of the microphone data on the speakers of his computer... He lays back stunned in his chair....

Echoing in the room is an eerie wail, followed by a trill and clicks- it repeats, and it is joined by more distant repetitions of the same patterns with small variations... Over and over

The room goes quiet and they look at the screen showing nothing but a vast methane ocean...

No one really gave a damn about the images- the sounds were like whale songs at a higher pitch-

The mission scientist breaks the silence with a cough, the camera jerks back to him-

"Uh, ummm, I would guess we are going back there!"

His grin is determined to be too wide to be broadcast.
