Opik on Jupiter...

Hi All

BR... just one that theme I read a piece by Opik - of Opik-Oort Cloud fame - from the 1960s. Even as evidence was accumulating for a "hot" Jupiter, he was defending the cold-hydrogen ice model. Based on what was good cosmogony the jovians were thought to have formed slowly out of ices in a cold protosolar nebula. "Mythology" only really applies to ideas if held sacred and inviolate by ugly fact.

I think the saddest irony of the revolution in planetary sciences that began in the 1960s is the fact that the only person advocating a hot model of the Jovians prior to the early infra-red studies was Immanuel Velikovsky.
