Muddying the waters...

Hi All

Marcia, the new findings about the masses of brown dwarfs as measured dynamically are going to force a big revision of modelling. A lot of previous free floating planet suspects will boost the numbers on brown dwarfs. And because current planet finding techniques only measure ~ m sin(i) I'm sure a lot of "planets" will be BDs - if they aren't already. There are a few planet candidates on the books that top ~13 Mj and so must be BDs. Any putative exoplanet with a mass greater than 6.5 Mj has a decent chance (~1/3) of being a minimum mass BD.

Yet some would say that any object that accretes is still a planet - but in practical terms to judge whether an object has accreted or not is too theory-dependent to be useful.
