I agree.
The sheer determination to screw the maximum use out of these machines is a tribute to the engineers involved.
For an even more amazing set of fixes, see this article on how JPL saved the Uranus encounter after Voyager 2's scan platform stuck at Saturn. It's astonishing how they updated the mid 70's programming, and commanded voyager to slew itself around to take panning shots of Miranda to allow long exposures due to low light levels out there.
Truly ingenious.
