On the pda the type is fairly small but back lighting makes it very easy to read. My eyes are bad enough that I require at least 1.5 glasses to read printed material and I can get by with no glasses on the pda. The ratio to a standard page is about 4/1.
The scrolling is page to page and the controls are so easy it is almost seamless. I had the same concerns but it is better than I could imagine.
The desktop/laptop applications are naturally better with larger print and a virtual book with font and color options but you lose the portability and who wants to do all their reading in front of a desktop. :)
The basic reader programs are free downloads and there are plenty of free ebooks out there. Give it a try you might like it.
