Common sense

Your blithering about the administration and election aside, I will say this:

Unsubstantiated testimony from captured insurgents and others is not the most reliable in the world. I'm not impressed by remnants of injuries on people willing to blow themselves to hamburger to make a point.

There has already been a fraudulent statement about Allawi personally executing prisoners that has seen wide circulation. I expect to see a lot more of this kind of thing.

That being said, given the culture of Iraq, and the long history of the Shiites and others with the Baathists:

Even without direct proof, common sense would tell any reasonable person that it's likely that some abuse is occurring in any Iraqi-run prisons, and probably worse abuse than any American ever committed. I have heard a lot from Iraqi civilians about how the U.S. is going way too easy on these people. Of course, this is just another of my wild speculations with no data to back it up, right?

I will concede that this is a real issue, and I hope that when Iraq is running its own affairs, it at least exceeds the human rights standards of every other Arab nation in the area (never mind the Saddam regime), even if it doesn't quite meet the standards of the ACLU.
