Scott and Leonov

Just finished their book.

Leonov who was selected cosmonaut years earlier than Scott, was very envious of him having been on the Moon. That was his biggest regret.

He was also Arthur C Clarke's good friend (I saw him invited by the BBC for a surprise evening in Clarke's honor) and one day he was summoned by soviet bureaucrats because it was discovered that in Clarke's book "2010", the names of the russian cosmonauts were all names of soviet imprisoned dissidents. The banning of Clarke's book in the SU infuriated Leonov!

Dave Scott, while on the Moon, and close to the LM, at one point, slowly raised his arm towards a point where the Earth hung in the sky. His stiff gloved thumb stood upright and he found his thumb could entirely blot the Earth from view. One small gesture and gone was the Earth.
This reminds him of lots of things: what got them there, what it meant and what will happen next. He fears that unless we protect and nurture our planet, everything with meaning will disappear in a relatively short period.
