Bow old boy, you need troops in there to stop the country from ripping itself apart in a civil war.
You need troops in there to quell the insurgents since we disbanded the army and havent trained enough others to do the job themselves.
that's a sign of incompetence on the part of the Bush Admin, not the Iraqi government.
BTW, you, like all of the media and 99.9% of Americans need to figure out what this freely elected government is supposed to be doing. Governing isnt really its purpose.
Your list below of "logical" steps is eerily reminiscent of a certain poster who believes that our atmosphere is fleeing.
Some of it sounds OK, but most of it is guff.
Tom, OTOH, goes in completely the other direction.
He still appears to cling to the belief that Iraq is suffering from mainly external adversaries rather than internal struggles. Hence "To keep evil bastards from eating those nations. "
He also can't seem to see the difference between "Cold War" and "peacetime". At least he didnt bring up Japan again.
This quote however makes sense, much more than you do on this.
"Okay, you see, there's these leftovers from the original government trying to get the country back. They've been killing Iraqis who don't want them back. In large numbers. They killed Iraqis for trying to vote for a new government. The present Iraqi security forces aren't quite up to stopping them on their own yet, just like the South Korean army by itself would have a hard time defeating a North Korean invasion, or the German army by itself would have had a hard time defeating the Soviets."
On further consideration, I revise my original declaration.
Boweser is almost completely wrong.
Tom is, in this thread at least, halfway right.

The whole thread (20 posts)
- Obvious - foreign troops not needed to prop up popularly elected gov't.
