As with the moon landings, it's kind of embarrassing to realize that the first and last humans to look at the bottom of the Challenger Deep did it over forty years ago.
A Japanese robot, called Kaiko, explored the Challenger Deep in 1995. The photo below shows sediment sampling at the bottom of the trench.
