"The other complaint is that Karzai really does not rule the whole country."

A crock of Krauthammer.

It is necessary for the government to control MOST of the country to have valid elections. Just as a for instance. Seems simple.

Probably need to control MOST of the country to be considered a valid government, even if you are a foreign puppet. Again, seems simple.

Krauthammer sort of slides over this, saying that historically the central govenment didn't control the countryside.

Wasn't that one of the changes in mind? Necessary changes. Including controlling the entire country?

Next, he says that Afghanistan historically grows opium, so that's nothing to worry about. I mean the central government is so weak it cannot control the heroin production. And neocons are so weak they don't care.

The part that is working is due to international cooperation. Legal, etc.

If there is a miracle here, it's that the press isn't reporting on the sham.
