Her Party, Too

At last, some relief from the RadCon Republicans!

Former Bush appointee urges more moderate party

Christine Todd Whitman is a very unhappy moderate Republican.

She thinks the GOP is being hijacked by “social fundamentalists” who want to overturn Roe v. Wade, ban gay marriage, prohibit all embryonic stem cell research and “oppose all tax increases as a matter of principle.”

Whitman was elected governor of New Jersey in 1992 and served two terms until 2001, when she left to become head of the Environmental Protection Agency under President Bush. Tiring of the ideological battles in Washington, she resigned in 2003.

It's My Party Too is a call to moderate Republicans to oppose the takeover of the party by the right wing. Some pundits think Whitman is also testing the national political waters through her book to see what kind of support, if any, there might already be for her in a 2008 race.

The radical right, she says, is forcing itself on President Bush by claiming, through the “moral values” votes, that it has the right to set his second-term agenda. Whitman replies that only about one-third of Bush voters cited moral values as the key issue.

To be sure, this probably is a trial balloon for a national campaign in 2008... but who cares? It needs to be said anyway. And of course, there's a website.
