Try Nature 1898 August... letters to the editor... A physicist speculating on the possibility of antimatter- probably the first time the term was used in print....
Best quote in the history of 'Nature' was in that letter in August 1898... "Perhaps astronomy, the oldest and yet most juvenile of sciences, has some surprises yet in store..."
in 1898 that was the understatement of the millenium...
He postulated that since there was positve and negatve electricity and magnitism- then why not 'negative matter'?
He presented it as fantasy, but he offered 'anti matter' as an explaination for comet tails-- comet tails were anti matter being repelled by the gravity of the matter that made up the sun....
Lets all toast Dr. Schuester, teacher and researcher at Manchester university... He lived to see his dream proven by Dirac 30+ years later...
He used the apparent rules of the universe at the time to anticipate the reality.... and he was right (he was very wrong in the details, but he seems to be the first to consider antimatter) I had to give a talk on the making of anti-hydrogen (never worked on doing that)... That is how I stumbled on his name... ever since I have used quotes from his century old letter to Nature as a closing to most talks I give...
"Astronomy may yet have some surprises to offer" :) in 1898.... how the hell would you explain the last century to someone in 1898? Hell how would you explain the past 20 years to someone in the 1970's?
His letter is followed by a detailed account of a frog being eaten by a snake.... if you like Monty Python you will love that article...
