It is time to make the stand now. I predicted at this site and elsewhere when McCain-Feingold was first shoved through, with great MSM praise and backslapping, that it was a terrible piece of legislation, that it would not do what it was allegedly created to do, and would inevitably end up being expanded. Now the FEC is after our right to communicate freely on the INTERNET.
All of us, whether we are left or right, are at fault in this. We did not raise heck oudly and clearly at the time. If we do not mark a line, prepare ourselves, and fight to win, our free speech is OVER.
This is exactly why I have been so against the ACLU led extremism over free expression of religion: Attacking free speech because it happens to be thought of as religious is just a beginning.
The FEC today is showing us what the next logical step is. The relentless nature of bad ideas means the badness has to expand.
The election of 2004 proves that regulation of free political speech in this country will not work. But instead of the government admitting this and pulling back from the path to censor us, they now have the itch to do it further. And when that fails, if we do not crush the effort itself, the next step will be more intrusive yet.
The Founding Fathers had it about right when it came to freedom of expression: Leave it alone, whether it is political or religious. Lately we have blown it big time regaring religion, tolerating ridiculous levels of censorship regarding religious expression. Perhaps this will be a wakeup call for those who thought that was pretty cool. I would rather put up with the ACLU making America safe for its porno backers than tolerate any more intrusion into our free speech.
Will the ACLU say the same thing regarding freedom of religion?
We either hang together and fight and defeat this now, or we will most assuredly be unplugged and muted seperately.
