Interesting. The "greater than" symbol in the body of the quote seems to have taken on a code of its own. Here's the correct text:

Cover: Fumarole tower on the upper (3000 m above sea level) flanks of Mount Erebus volcano, Antarctica. These towers form above natural hot vents and because of the continuous subzero temperatures the hot steam immediately turns to ice. Hot steam can be seen coming out of the chimney. Summer and winter temperatures average -25 and -50 °C, respectively. Towers eventually become unstable and collapse.
