re: Martian moon
I have heard an explanation (Sagan?) that the groves might have been formed from escaping water when this little moon was captured by Mars.
To me, it looks like some kind of layering, as if Phobos broke off of a much larger world where material was put down in layers. Perhaps a Vesta or Ceres size world?
