The problem with assimilating Taiwan is this:
The Hong-Kong population, now being free to enter and leave the rest of China, is spreading the feared ideas of democracy all over the country. If Taiwan joins (willingly or otherwise) with China, there will be that much more pressure for reform. In the long run, Hong-Kong and Taiwan will take over China instead of the reverse.
